Battle of the Hybrid Crossovers: Honda vs. Subaru

It seems that crossovers and hybrid vehicles are becoming ever more popular. So how does one choose the best from so many options? There are plenty of comparison tools out there, which will help you see the numbers side-by-side, but sometimes you need something a little more tangible. As two of the top hybrid SUVs, the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid and the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid are similar in many ways, but also have key distinctions that will help you determine which is best for you. Read on to learn more.

First off, the 2020 Subaru will cost you about $7,000 more than the 2020 Honda base price. So if you’re on a budget, the choice is easy. However, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid, vs. the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid which is not. That means the Subaru can take you up to 17 miles in full-electric mode, while the Honda CR-V is really made to get better gas mileage, and will only go 1-2 miles in EV mode – better for pulling in to the garage quietly than being eco-conscious. So, if your motivation is environmental, Subaru offers fewer emissions and more electricity.

As far as performance goes, the Honda CR-V Hybrid boasts 212-hp and 232-lbs of torque, over the Subaru Hybrid’s 148-hp and 134-lbs of torque. You’ll also get better overall gas mileage with the Honda CR-V at 40mpg city (35 highway, 38 combined)* vs. Subaru’s 35 mpg combined. When you factor in full electric mode on the Subaru, you’ll get 90 MPGe†, which is nothing to laugh at.

Neither hybrid vehicle is exceptional at towing, both maxing out at around 1,000 lbs. While both models offer AWD (standard on the Subaru), the Honda CR-V is not so much for off-road capability as for handling mud and snow, which it does excellently. If you do want to go far off the road, the Subaru tackles steep inclines better with capable on-dirt features. Both models feature top-notch safety features, all 2020 Honda vehicles include Honda Sensing® standard. Honda Sensing® features:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
  • Cross Traffic Monitor

While looks are subjective, both models offer new, sleek body design and plenty of color options. The CR-V Hybrid comes with a rear spoiler, while the Crosstrek Hybrid does not. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is slightly larger than the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid and offers more storage compartments and cubbies. Both Hybrid vehicles have improved sound deadening in the cabin, providing for a quiet, comfortable ride for up to 5. The CR-V Hybrid now comes with heated seats standard as well as plenty of options, including:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration
  • Qi wireless charging
  • Leather-trimmed interior
  • Power tailgate
  • Automatic-dimming rearview mirror
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Parking sensors

Both the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid and 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid are much improved hybrid models compared to their earlier iterations. If you are a rugged outdoors-person or prefer driving in all-electric mode longer, the Subaru may fit better for you. If you want affordability, drive quality, cargo/passenger room and more drivetrain power on-road, opt for the new 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Honda tends to keep its resale value better as well.
