2021 Honda Civic Type R Hits the Streets

Car And Driver calls it “among the most entertaining cars to drive right now.”* RoadShow by CNet simply says, “hot damn!”** and Hot Cars proclaims, “American Finally Gets the Best Hot Hatch.”*** The car getting all this PR is none other than the 2021 Honda Civic Type R.

For the 2021 model year, Honda is also releasing a highly coveted Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition in Phoenix Yellow, capped at 600 units for all of North America. Luckily for the rest of us, the standard 2021 Honda Civic Type R still boasts incredible speed and handling and a much nicer price. Let’s see why everyone is so excited!

2021 Honda Civic Type R

The statement-making Honda Civic Type R has some fresh updates for 2021, inside and out. The new Civic Type R boasts 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter VTEC® Turbocharged and Intercooled DOHC 4-Cylinder Engine with Direct Injection with a 6-speed manual transmission; no automatic transmission is currently offered. The Type R is for true driving enthusiasts.

Other than the powerful engine, the Civic Type R utilizes state-of-the-art aerodynamics to maximize speed and efficiency. The rear wing spoiler creates downforce, the rear diffuser reduces drag, while the vortex generators above the rear window and underbody spoiler kit help direct airflow to provide stability at high speeds and while cornering. Front fender vents help cool the engine so that you can put the pedal to the metal.

Love it or hate it, the design of the Honda Civic Type R invites discussion and awe. Redesigned for the 2021 model year, the Civic Type R has an expanded front grille, gloss black accents and gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels with unmistakable red Brembo® front bark calipers. Inside you’ll find red sport seats, fitting of a race car, with suede-effect fabric that helps keep you in place during the tightest of turns. Sport pedals finish out the race car feel, along with an Alcantra®-wrapped steering wheel for extra grip. Use the Honda LogR™ datalogger app to track your lap times and play back your entire session that you can load into your smartphone with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration.

Because you’re not always going to be trying to beat your best time, there are three drive modes – +R, Sport and Comfort – which retune the suspension, change steering settings and adjust the throttle so you can drive the best in any situation.

You’ll still get all the conveniences of a modern car, with Honda Sensing® standard as well as a multi-angle rearview camera, navigation, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Enjoy listening to music with the 540-Watt, 12-speaker premium audio system and dual-zone climate control to keep you comfortable in every season.

2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition

If you can get your hands on an exclusive Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition, you’ll notice it’s a bit lighter. All the better to go faster, my dear! Shedding 46 pounds and adding Michelin® Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires on 20-Inch BBS Forged-Aluminum Wheels, you’ll go even faster ‘round the track. In fact, the 2021 Type R Limited Edition broke the record for a front-wheel-drive lap record at the Suzuka race circuit in Japan, taking just 2 minutes, 23.993 seconds to make it around.

To make that speed, the Limited Edition Type R lost its rear heating ducts, tonneau cover and rear wiper blade, along with some sound-deadening materials. Less weight, more growl. Honda also retuned the steering and dampers to give you more control and feedback.

Outside, other than the bright Phoenix Yellow exterior paint, you’ll find a gloss black roof with gloss black accents, gloss black BBS wheels and a dark chrome Civic badge on the rear hatch.

Even if you aren’t lucky or savvy enough to get a hold of the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition, be satisfied with the fact that the 2021 Honda Civic Type R is still one of the most fun to drive and fastest Honda’s currently on the market. And it won’t break the bank either. Starting at $38,450, the Civic Type R comes fully loaded, although there are plenty of Honda accessories to add on, of course.
